Hi, I am Birgit,

Independent nutritionist for dogs and expert in plant-based nutrition

I’ve been vegan for three years –

Before that, I ate a vegetarian diet for about 15 years. So I know the dilemma many people face: How can I follow a vegetarian or vegan diet myself but feed my dog large amounts of tinned meat?

With Plant-Based Dogs, I want to show you another way. Not only is it possible to feed your dog a plant-based diet – you can even do something for his health.

Five years ago, I asked myself: Can I feed my dog a meat-free diet?

My dog Cajus, who came from an Italian animal shelter, was diagnosed with leishmaniasis – a disease that affects many animals from the Mediterranean region. The diagnosis meant that we would have to feed him as little purine as possible.

That set the ball rolling. A low-purine diet means lots of vegetables and carbohydrates and little or no meat. But would he get enough proteins? I was scared of that, but I also really wanted to give him a long, healthy life.

So I pored over books, read through the internet, and got to grips with the subject. In the first step, I concluded I should replace meat with dairy products, naturally low in purines, and high-protein plant-based foods such as pulses. That’s how Cajus became a vegetarian dog. Only a year or two later, I changed his diet to be more vegan.

So, Cajus’s diet change only happened gradually. It was essential to me that he gets all his vitamins and minerals at all times, so I calculated precisely what I needed to feed him. A healthy diet really is a science.

And lo and behold, with the help of the plant-based diet and medication, Cajus recovered from leishmaniasis. Today he is fit as a fiddle, full of energy and now without medication!

Today I know:

This works for most dogs!

Because I was so interested in dog nutrition and wanted to understand the background of a meat-free nutritional concept, I also began training as a dog nutritionist at the ATN Academy in Switzerland.

Two years later, plant-based nutrition for dogs is now my absolute expertise.

Even though dogs descended from wolves, after more than 30,000 years of domestication, they have strongly adapted to living with humans during this time.

In the process, their digestion has also adapted—after all, people then did not feed their dogs premium dog food but much more often leftovers. Unlike wolves, most dogs can, therefore, also digest starchy foods without any problems.

Numerous studies today show that dogs can live healthier and longer on a plant-based diet than on a commercial, meat-based dog food.

With Plant-Based Dogs, I help you to feed your dog a meat-free and complete diet

During my training, I worked on the subject so thoroughly that I can now help other dogs and their owners switch to a meat-free and fit diet.

Whether for health or ethical reasons, it doesn’t matter why you want to eliminate or reduce meat in your dog’s diet.

I show dog parents how to feed their furry friends the proper diet while avoiding meat as much as possible.

What counts for me?

Your dog’s health – regardless of nutritional trends and ideology

What it's all about...

  • It’s not about removing every milligram of meat from your dog’s diet – it’s about putting your dog on a healthy nutritional footing.
  • Every little helps: every step counts towards a less meaty diet, both for the animals and for our environment.
  • Getting the correct information about healthy nutrition takes a lot of work. With Plant-Based Dogs, I offer you the best advice in the interest of your dog.
  • While a vegan diet is not suitable for every dog, I am here to provide personalized and healthy diet advice. I believe in a balanced approach to dog nutrition that takes into account individual needs and preferences.
  • I don’t want to impose my convictions on dog parents. Still, plant-based food is close to my heart simply because it is healthy for dogs.

Not only a vegan dog nutritionist, but also a...

Eco-Friendly Shopper

Clothing has always been important to me, but I am now cautious to shop only fairly and ecologically. I’ve been buying from organic labels or secondhand for some time and have set myself a limit on my consumption. I am also much stricter about what stays in my wardrobe and follow the KonMari Method: Does this spark joy?

Animal Lover

As a child, I once nursed a dormouse through the winter and released it back into the wild in the spring. Sometime later, I found an injured newt, which I nursed back to health. Then, it was a hedgehog that needed care. Later in life, having children myself, we adopted many rescues, such as rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, cats, and dogs. Today, my dogs Cajus and Stella come from animal shelters, too.

Sensitive to Taste and Smell

I outdo everyone in my family with my sense of taste and smell. Yet when I come into the kitchen, I immediately smell what spices my husband has used for cooking. Of course, I can’t compete with my dogs on this.

Romantic

My husband and I got engaged on the birthday of my first dog, Denny. I got Denny when I was 12, and we made so many memories together. He still lived to meet my future husband. Shortly after Denny died, we were about to get engaged. His birthday was coming up, so we chose this day, to keep Denny in our hearts forever. We still look forward to that day every year.

Impressionism-Fan

I am a big fan of Impressionism, especially of the painter Berthe Morisot. She is a true heroine for me. As a woman, she wasn’t allowed to study at art academies then. Yet, she didn’t let that stop her from becoming a painter—and a very successful one.

Unusual Beginnings

The love of animals ran in our family. As a child, I always wanted a dog or a cat. But my father wouldn’t allow it. Not because he didn’t like animals but because he didn’t want to leave them alone at home all day while we were at school or work. But one day, my dad brought me an aquarium. Inside was a mussel that he had picked from a dried-up pond, probably saving her life. Of course, it wasn’t the same as a pet – I couldn’t stroke or cuddle it. But I could watch her as she slowly made her tracks in the sand at the bottom of the aquarium.

That sounds good?
